Last night I got some news about my lost love that really shook me. I miss him a lot and my heart feels like it was broken into a million pieces. So many emotions flood my mind and heart: anger, relief, sadness, depression. I feel betrayed, and start thinking about how I was rejected by a guy. Am I not pretty enough? Did he stop liking me? Why did this happen? Why did he do this to me?
Last night filled me with anger, hurt, and OCD. I have gone through two major losses when it comes to relationships, and this second time still isn’t easy.
I hope this post brings comfort and peace and encouragement to anyone else going through a situation like this. Let’s address some common feelings that we all feel when we lose someone we love, and see what The Lord has to say about it.
Self-Image
- 1 Samuel 16:7 ESV
But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.”
Here we see a glimpse into God’s eyes. We know that God looks at the heart, not just the outward appearance. What is most important is what’s in the heart, not what’s on the outside.
- Genesis 1:26-27 ESV
Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness…” So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.
Here, we see that God made humans in His likeness! We are made in the likeness of God! God is Holy, Beautiful, and Almighty. If we are made in His image, what other people think doesn’t matter. Because we are made in the image of the Most Beautiful One ever.
- Psalm 139:14 ESV
I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.
If we are fearfully and wonderfully made, why does it matter what our ex thinks of us? Or what anyone thinks of us, for that matter?
God’s Faithfulness
Even if someone did stop liking you romantically, that doesn’t change God’s faithfulness. He is always faithful, always loving, always powerful, and always great.
- 2 Thessalonians 3:3 ESV
But the Lord is faithful. He will establish you and guard you against the evil one.
God is ALWAYS faithful.
- Psalm 33:4 ESV
For the word of the Lord is upright, and all his work is done in faithfulness.
God is right and good and sinless. He is always faithful, even if it’s hard to believe sometimes.
- Lamentations 3:22-23 ESV
The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.
God’s Plans for Your Life
- Jeremiah 29:11-13 ESV
For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.
- Proverbs 3:5-6 ESV
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.
- Ephesians 2:10 ESV
For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
I hope this brings you some peace and joy with whatever you are going through. You are not alone. God is with you always.
… And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:20 NIV
